Lanterna Magica 2022 was an immersive light-art walk staged in the woods and gardens around Château de La Hulpe, Belgium. Over a 2.5 km route, visitors encountered theatrical light installations, soundscapes, and interactive elements. The highlight of the journey was the castle itself, where projection mapping brought the historic building to life as the central storytelling moment of the event.

Our role was the design and execution of the full 3D projection mapping on the castle façade. The workflow began with a high-precision 3D scan of the architecture, enabling us to build a detailed digital model. This model allowed us to align visuals with the structural features like balconies, windows & towers, so that every element of the projection matched the real-world surface.

The creative concept focused on extending the fairytale atmosphere of Lanterna Magica. We developed a visual storyline in which the castle appeared to shift moods and forms: glowing with warmth, dissolving into nature, and reassembling into luminous patterns. Each scene was synchronized with the sound design of the walk to create a cohesive narrative arc.

From a technical standpoint, the mapping used multiple high-lumen projectors blended across the full façade, supported by a media server setup to ensure frame-accurate playback and color consistency. Special attention was given to sightlines across the viewing area so that visitors could experience the illusion from multiple angles.

The result was a seamless integration of digital projection with physical architecture, turning the castle into both a canvas and a character within the Lanterna Magica universe. The projection became a natural climax of the trail, reinforcing the event's goal of immersing audiences in a world where history, technology, and imagination converge.
